ISS – passive ink staining against ATM explosive attacks

ISS (Ink Staining Solution) protects cash directly inside the ATM cassettes. In an explosive attack, the ink containers in the cassettes burst and stain the banknotes. The loot becomes worthless to criminals – and a further explosion is no longer worth it.

ISS needs no electronics and no power supply and is very easy to retrofit into existing cassettes. We handle planning, supply and installation – from a single branch to your entire estate.

How it works

How ISS protects your cash

Passive triggering

The ink containers have predetermined breaking points and are triggered by the pressure wave of a gas or solid-explosive detonation – with no delay. Forceful blows to the cassette also trigger them. There are no sensors, batteries or cables that could fail or be tampered with.

Banknotes become worthless

With 500 ml of ink per cassette, the banknotes are extensively stained within seconds. Stained money is practically useless to criminals.

Deterring a second explosion

An additional marking charge in the ATM head bursts during the first explosion. If the attacker sees the ink, the likelihood of a second explosion targeting the safe is reduced.

No impact on operations

ISS is fitted in the cassette lid. Capacity, replenishment and cassette handling remain unchanged, and false triggering in daily operation is ruled out.

Compatibility

For common ATMs and recyclers

ISS is available for the cassettes of widely used device families – for both small (€5–20) and large denominations (€50–100).

Process

From cassette inventory to protected ATM

Step 1

Inventory

We record sites, device types, cassettes and denominations – including cash centres and branch replenishment.

Step 2

Quotation and planning

An individual quotation and an installation plan that does not interrupt your cash operations.

Step 3

On-site installation

Our technicians retrofit the cassettes directly in your branches or cash centre and label them with the installation date.

Step 4

Check after three years

The manufacturer recommends replacing the ink every three years. Together with you, we check its condition and replace it if needed.

FAQ

Questions and answers about ISS

What does “passive” ink staining mean?

A passive system works without electronics, sensors or a power supply. The ink is released purely mechanically by the pressure wave of an explosion. This makes ISS particularly robust, easy to retrofit and low-maintenance in daily use.

Does ISS work against both gas and solid-explosive attacks?

Yes. ISS responds to the pressure wave of both types of attack and also to forceful impact such as blows to the cassette. It triggers immediately, with no delay.

How does ISS differ from active staining systems (IBNS)?

Active systems rely on electronics, sensors and their own power supply. ISS needs none of this: the investment is lower, installation is simpler and there are no electronics to maintain. According to the manufacturer, its use is also independent of approvals from ATM manufacturers.

Can ISS be triggered accidentally?

No. It is triggered only by the pressure wave of an explosion or by forceful impact on the cassette. False triggering is ruled out during normal replenishment, transport and cassette exchange.

Does it reduce cassette capacity?

No. The ink container sits in the cassette lid, so the number of banknotes per cassette stays the same.

How long does the ink last?

The manufacturer recommends replacement every three years. We check its condition together with you and only replace it when necessary.

Can ISS be combined with other protective measures?

Yes. ISS makes the loot worthless, while an APC night shutter makes mechanical access to the ATM harder. Together with you, we decide which combination makes sense for your sites.
